Tonight is the biggest night in the history of Strikeforce. A stacked card that boasts no fewer than three title fights will be on offer for those tuning into CBS this weekend.
Middleweight Champion Jake Shields will defend his 185 lb. title against Dan Henderson. This will be Henderson's first fight since his vicious K.O. of Michael Bisping last July, and will see him take on a very talented but much smaller opponent (a natural welterweight) in Shields.
Also on the card is Shinya Aoki, who makes the trip from Japan to represent Dream as he takes on Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.
Aoki, prior to the Penn vs. Edgar fight, was widely regarded as the only Lightweight thought to be able to even challenge B.J. Penn. He now finds himself on prime time American television.
The third and final Title fight of the scheduled televised card will see Light-Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi take on number one contender Muhamed “King Mo” Lawal.
Mousasi this week penned a new four-fight deal with Strikeforce, putting speculation of a move to the UFC to bed... well, for the time being at least.
These are some of the very best non-UFC fighters in the world, and some many UK fans may not be aware of.
Jake Shields is more than capable of giving GSP a run for his money. He may even get that fight once his contract is up after this current fight against Dan Henderson.
Henderson himself really should have been facing Anderson Silva in Abu Dhabi instead of Demian Maia, but contract disputes saw him opt out of the UFC and move to Strikeforce.
Gegard Mousasi would not be a “gimme” fight for any of the top 205 lb. fighters in the UFC, either. During the recent speculation over his contract negotiations, many were dreaming of fights between Mousasi and the likes of Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua and even Anderson Silva.
So - what does this have to do with the UK?... Well if you reside here, and you are able to resist tuning into MMATorch until tomorrow evening, then you can enjoy the whole of the Strikeforce: Nashville event, via tape delay at 10pm Sunday night.
The event will air on Bravo: Sky channel 123 – so tune in!
