Those in charge of determining who earned bonus money for Saturday's Aldo vs. Faber event had a tough job on their hands, as the action packed card saw more than one excellent fight go to a decision, multiple fighters pull of submissions and more than one knockout or TKO on the card. In the end, all four fighters that received the $65,000 bonuses did more than enough to deserve them.
Benson Henderson, Manvel Gamburyan, Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung all took home the organizational high $65,000 bonuses for their efforts on Saturday night.
Henderson pulled off a nasty guillotine choke submission of Donald Cerrone in the first round of their WEC Lightweight Championship rematch. After earning a decision in their first bout that some believed should have gone Cerrone's way, Henderson left no doubt about this one, ending the fight in less than two minutes.
Gamburyan pulled off the upset of the night, knocking out former Featherweight Champion Mike Brown in the first round of their fight. Brown was looking to get back to a possible rematch with Jose Aldo, the man who took his Title, with a win in this fight, but a big right to the jaw from Gamburyan sent him crumbling to the canvas, and subsequent punches from the Armenian on the ground forced the referee to stop the fight.
Garcia and Jung participated in one of the best fights in years, let alone of the night, and though a more technical bout between Scott Jorgensen and Antonio Banuelos could have made an argument for this bonus, Garcia and Jung were clear winners for most. In a sloppy three round brawl, the two fighters blasted each other with combinations, both rocking the other on more than one occasion.
The punches continued to be thrown and they continued to land up until the final bell. It was a highly exciting and enjoyable fight that has already been dubbed the "Griffin vs. Bonnar for the WEC" in many circles, though the outcome was marred by what many believe was the wrong decision. MMATorch had it scored 29-28 for Jung, and many vocal fans and observers felt the fight should have gone to "The Korean Zombie," but Garcia earned the nod by split decision.
Penick's Analysis: It was such a great card last night with so many great performances that they really could have given out some extra bonuses. Still, I have no problem with any of the fighters that earned them last night because they did just that: they earned them. Gamburyan's KO of Brown was shocking and exciting, Henderson's quick finish was a perfectly executed submission and the Garcia-Jung bout was one of the most fun to watch fights of the last year if not further back then that. Great night for everyone involved.
