Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone came into Saturday's Aldo vs. Faber event on pay-per-view with a ton of anticipation surrounding their fight. Their first meeting was one of the best fights of 2009, as it was a five round battle with takedowns, submission attempts, hard hitting action on the feet and non stop drama.
The highly anticipated rematch didn't reach the level of drama that the first fight did, but that's because Henderson wouldn't let it get there.
After securing an early takedown, Henderson tried to work his ground and pound on Cerrone against the cage. Cerrone was able to scramble, but as soon as he rolled to his knees Henderson locked on a guillotine choke and dropped to his back.
He tightened the perfectly executed choke and Cerrone had no choice but to submit, and he did so quickly.
Henderson has now taken out all comers in the WEC's lightweight division; and with very few, if any, challengers left for him in the WEC, there will be calls for his graduation into the UFC as soon as they're able to take him.
For Cerrone, after three failed attempts to earn the Title, a long talked about drop to featherweight is probably on tap.
Penick's Analysis: Henderson was extremely impressive in this fight, and Cerrone never got a chance to really get into this one. Henderson locked on the choke so quickly when Cerrone rolled over I'm not sure there was much else he could have done to avoid it. It was a split second move and Cerrone was caught. The UFC needs to bring Henderson in now, as the WEC has no one of interest at the moment to challenge him. He'll likely end up facing the Shalorus-Varner winner, but he's already defeated Varner and Shalorus isn't a big sell for him either. The challenge is in the Octagon, and he deserves to test himself there.
