Pat Barry allowed Mirko Cro Cop to take their fight over in the second and third rounds last Saturday at UFC 115 after hurting him in the first, it was chalked up to him being star struck and giving too much respect to an idol.
"No doubt about it I think Pat Barry did show too much respect," said Dana White in an interview with MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani after the fight. "Mirko doesn't think so, cause Mirko got hit with some big shots. But he'd hit him with big shots and then didn't follow up with them... Mirko Cro Cop's always a dangerous guy and when you've got a guy like that hurt you should go in for the finish."
But while it's easy to write off the reasons for Barry's inability to capitalize on a first round knockdown that saw Cro Cop's left eye busted up and caused significant swelling on the left side of his face, there's another explanation: broken bones.
Barry said at the post fight press conference that he got too excited with his punches and wound up "crushing" his finger, which wound up causing what he called "jarring pain" as the round wore on.
After the event, Barry then posted a picture of himself on Twitter after a visit to the hospital. In it he's in a wheelchair with a cast on his right hand and one on his right foot as well. Barry captioned the photo in his post, saying "Broke hand in first Broke something in foot in first or second."
So while he may not have gone in for the kill, it was not as simple as too much respect for an idol. Unfortunately, the outcome remains the same, and for the second time in his career he's lost a fight by submission.
Penick's Analysis: It appears when he busted Mirko's face with the second knockdown right hand, he also busted up his hand. It's an unfortunate injury that clearly took him out of his element for the rest of the fight. It makes the way the fight went down make even more sense, but doesn't take away from Cro Cop's victory in the least. Barry was rendered ineffective when his only real weapon was taken from him, and to have his power kicking leg suffer a break as well made that doubly true. Barry's going to need to come back strong after a fight in which he was perceived to have given it away.
