After dropping decisions to two of the top fighters in the UFC's lower weight classes, Eddie Wineland finally picked up his first win in the UFC on Friday night at UFC on FX 3 in Sunrise, Florida.
Wineland entered the UFC last March after the WEC was folded in, but he fell short in fights against Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez, losing by decision in each fight. On Friday, he took on their Team Alpha Male teammate Scott Jorgensen, and didn't let the same thing happen a third time.
After a good back and forth first round, a round which saw Wineland knock Jorgensen down and score a takedown, things picked up. Jorgensen opened up a nasty cut over Wineland's left eye, but Wineland continued to fight forward. His reach advantage definitely had an effect, as he continued to land jabs and overhand rights that damaged Jorgensen throughout. Finally, a stutter step right hand landed and dropped Jorgensen to the mat. Wineland followed up on the ground, and the fight was stopped shortly thereafter.
The win halted the two fight losing streak for Wineland, while Jorgensen has now lost consecutive fights for the first time in his career.
