Paul Sass put an end to Jacob Volkmann's undefeated run in the lightweight division on Saturday night, notching his ninth career win by triangle choke at UFC 146.
Volkmann brought the fight to the ground early after a few exchanges on the feet, and tried to work a controlling top game. He landed several strikes, and held position, but as he tried to drive Sass' head to the cage he left his left arm wrapped around Sass' body.
The submission acumen of the Brit was on full display as he used that slight opening to lock on the triangle choke/armbar combination, forcing Volkmann to tap immediately. The win kept Sass undefeated at 13-0, while Volkmann drops to 14-3 (5-3 in the UFC).
Also on the night's Facebook prelims, former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown picked up his second straight win in the UFC with a decision over Daniel Pineda to open the card.
The back and forth affair saw Brown's size and strength advantage edge Pineda's speed and reversals, taking it with scores of 29-28 across the board.
