England's John Maguire won his second straight fight in the UFC, and his seventh straight overall, on Saturday, submitting DaMarques Johnson in spectacular fashion in a step-over counter to an armbar.
Maguire's grappling game was the difference in the bout, as he took Johnson down and put him on his back in the first and second rounds. Johnson was game for the battle, however, and fought well from his back.
Johnson threatened with submission attempts, reversals, counters, and strikes, but Maguire ultimately kept himself ahead halfway through the fight. Then, as Johnson was working from a kimura in half guard, Maguire quickly stepped over his head and applied an armbar, forcing a quick tap.
The move was reminiscent of Matt Hughes' armbar submission win over Georges St-Pierre in their first fight, and kept Maquire undefeated in the Octagon. With the loss, Johnson has now moved to 4-4 in the Octagon, and has alternated wins and losses in his last six.
