Henry Martinez made his UFC debut on Saturday night a weight class above his own on short notice, and should have left the Octagon with his first UFC win. Unfortunately for him, two judges scored his fight with Matt Riddle in favor of the veteran welterweight, and he dropped a split decision.
Martinez employed a very good counter-striking attack through the first two rounds, utilizing his much smaller frame to crack Riddle almost every time he engaged. But at the end of the second round, Riddle turned on the engines and delivered a big round ending flurry.
He then followed that up with a strong third round that was clearly his, but most felt he should have lost the second round with Martinez being strong throughout the frame. Riddle halts his two fight losing streak with the win, but definitely didn't impress in the process. Martinez drops to 8-2, snapping a four fight winning streak.
