The heavyweight division in Strikeforce will be no more after two more fights in 2012, it was revealed today. The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix will finish early in the year with the fight between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier, and the winner of that bout will get one more fight against a "top rated" heavyweight sometime later in 2012, at which time the division will be phased out.
UFC President Dana White and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker revealed the change during a conference call on Thursday, citing a lack of depth in the heavyweight division and a desire to focus on the six remaining weight classes they'll have.
It's not yet known what the future is for the heavyweights on the roster currently, however, as a plan is not yet firmly in place as it gets phased out. The potential is there for fighters to be moved to the UFC, but White said they're not yet sure what's going to happen.
