Fedor Emelianenko's second straight loss on Saturday, coming against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in New Jersey, has brought out a lot of discussion about what has led to Fedor's recent downfall.
But not enough credit has been given to "Bigfoot" for what he was able to do the "The Last Emperor" on Saturday night. Fightmetric.com has released some interesting numbers about the fight, and it highlights just how impressive Silva was in dominating Fedor during the second round, closing his right eye to cause doctors to stop the fight.
This was an unprecedented beating handed out by Silva on Fedor. Just how impressive was his performance? Here's FightMetric's numbers:
He landed 28 significant strikes in the fight, eight more than any previous opponent in Fedor's career.
He landed two takedowns, tied with Mark Coleman (twice) and Kevin Randleman for most landed in a fight against Fedor.
He attempted three submissions, tied with Fabricio Werdum for most attempted in a single fight against Fedor.
He executed six passes, three more than the previous high by a Fedor opponent.
Fedor has taken a lot of punishment throughout his career, but part of his mystique has been his uncanny ability to take anything and everything dished out towards him and find a way to come back to pick up the win. He's done it time after time, but this time the damage was too much, the beating too brutal, and Silva accomplished what no others have done in dominating "The Last Emperor."
So while it's easy to focus on the great career of Emelianenko perhaps coming to an end, "Bigfoot's" career-best performance should not at all be overlooked.
The only EliteXC Heavyweight Champion, Silva only has two career losses, and is 9-1 overall in his last 10 fights dating back to 2007. His win on Saturday was a statement to the rest of the tournament field and to heavyweights everywhere, "Bigfoot" is real, and he's a threat to anyone.
