UFC Fight Night 79 was this past weekend. Let's get right to the rundown. MMAcolumnist-HydenFrank_300x250This will be a short one this week due to the holidays.

UFC Fight Night 79

GOOD: Doo Ho Choi stops Sam Sicilia

Choi came out on fire and dropped Silicia, then dropped him again later and finally finished things with a flurry on the ground. Sicilia got in some big strikes of his own, but Choi was really impressive in this fight, as he got the stoppage a minute and a half into the first round. Choi has shown tremendous potential in his fights so far. The sky seems to be the limit for this young man.

BAD/GOOD: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alberto Mina

There was a period, about the last forty seconds in the second round, where Mina unleashed a big barrage and nearly finished Akiyama. Other than that, the rest of the fight was fairly uneventful. Mina won the split decision, which sounds about right because the fight was so close.

GOOD: Dong Hyun Kim stops Dominic Waters

Kim got a beautiful throw in and took Waters down into a crucifix position. He started raining blows down on him. After a bit, the ref was forced to step in and call an end to things. Nice win for Kim.

GOOD: Benson Henderson vs. Jorge Masvidal

This one perfectly encapsulates a Benson Henderson fight. Close, competitive, and easy to make a case for either guy to get the win. Henderson won the split decision, which is what he usually does. If you've got a close fight that leads to arguments about who actually won, odds are that you're watching a Henderson fight. I don't mean that as an insult necessarily, but that's certainly the M.O. for Henderson as of late. He likes to out-point guys to get the decision. I personally found the fight interesting, but lacking action at times. Maybe it was the early time period? Maybe I just got spoiled by Doo Ho Choi and Dong Hyun Kim and their wins from earlier? Either way, I just wasn't feeling this fight all that much. It was a pretty good fight, though, I just wasn't all that into it.
