UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun II
MAY 8, 2010
LIVE FROM MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA

Daley opens the show saying that Koscheck's just a dick. Koscheck said they don't respect each other and they'll settle it in the cage tonight. Machida said he wanted the rematch to prove why he's the Champion. He said the first fight was decided by the judges, but tonight it will be decided by him. Alright, it's time for UFC 113!

Mike Goldberg welcomes fans to the show as they go through the obligatory crowd shot. He brings in Joe Rogan as always and they run down the fights set for tonight's card along with the rules of the Octagon.

PRE FIGHT: Cote said Belcher is a gamer, but he's going to be in front of him, he's going to knock him out and prove again that he's a top middleweight. Belcher said the middleweight division is wide open, and he's going to go in and make a statement to prove he's ready for a Title shot.

Amazing finish by Belcher. That was not an illegal drop by Belcher, as he slammed him on his face and not the top of his head. It was Triple H's pedigree, basically.

WINNER: Belcher via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:25 of the second round

POST FIGHT: Belcher said he was happy to start fighting to his potential. He said if he steps back and breathes he can take anyone out. And he said he could stand with Anderson Silva and take him out and said he's ready for a Title shot. He didn't get much love from the Montreal crowd.

STAR RATING: (***+) That was an excellent fight. Both fighters had near submissions in the first round and the finishing sequence by Belcher in the second was very much highlight reel material. The face slam was vicious and he immediately took Cote's back and locked that choke on. Awesome win by Belcher.

RAMIFICATIONS: Belcher's not likely to get a shot at Silva, because if Silva gets past Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort he's likely on his way out of the division, but if Silva stays Belcher will be third in line before the aforementioned challengers.

-We get a hype video for UFC 114 later this month.

WINNER: Mitrione via TKO at 4:24 of the second round

POST FIGHT: Kimbo interrupted Mitrione's post fight interview to give him props and thank Montreal.

STAR RATING: (***) Another really fun fight. Kimbo had no gas tank in the second and Mitrione, considering it was his second career fight, was very impressive.

RAMIFICATIONS: That was only Mitrione's second fight, but if he continues to improve he may actually do something in the sport. That was a very impressive performance considering how little MMA experience he has.

Stephens shoots in and takes Stout down late. Stout gets back up but Stephens lands a big punch. Stephens pushes forward and the round ends.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Stout. He did some very good damage in that round, but it was too little too late.

WINNER: Stephens via split decision (30-27, 29-28, 28-29)

POST FIGHT: Stephens thanked the Montreal crowd and his sponsors and then Joe Silva for setting up the fight. He said he felt he was more powerful but gave Stout props.

STAR RATING: (**+) Another good fight on this card that was very much back and forth. The scorecards were all over the place, but it was pretty close in the second and third and I can see an argument for both guys in either of those rounds.

RAMIFICATIONS: Stout is going to stay a middle-tier player in the lightweight division, as he just can't finish fights in the Octagon. I'm not sure how much upside Stephens has, but he had a good fight here.

STAR RATING: (**+) Sloppy fight that was exciting at times and Doerksen pulled off a nice submission after a mistake by Lawlor.

FIGHT FOUR: JOSH KOSCHECK VS. PAUL DALEY (WELTERWEIGHT)

PRE FIGHT: Daley said Koscheck hasn't fought anyone like him. He said he's stronger and faster. Koscheck said Daley is going to see who the pussy is. I don't think that came out how he wanted it to. Daley said everyone's going to see who the better man is.

Daley pushes Koscheck off but Koscheck stayed on him and took Daley's back. He dropped back and got one hook in. Koscheck pushes away from the cage and tries to work for the choke. Daley is in a lot of trouble but he spins out. He lands a knee to Koscheck's face with Koscheck's knee on the ground. The replay showed that it didn't come close to landing. That was such a dive. Wow. And Miragliotta took a point away right away. That's terrible. Wow, Koscheck is milking this and this is terrible. Everyone is going to want Daley to win this fight now. That was unbelievable on Koscheck's part. Koscheck shot in for a single as the round started up again. He drove Daley to the cage and the crowd booed the hell out of Koscheck.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Koscheck. The point was actually not taken away, they confirm. That's one of the worst faked illegal blows ever in MMA, and after he did it against Anthony Johnson he's not going to get any benefit of the doubt. That was awful.

ROUND TWO: Daley presses forward and lands a punch but gets clipped by Koscheck. Koscheck shoots and drives Daley back and takes him down on the cage into side control. He lands a knee to the body. Daley tried to move to his feet and Koscheck got his back with both hooks in with 40 seconds left. Miragliotta threatened to stand the fight up. Bunch of idiots in this fight. Koscheck ends the round on Daley's back.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Koscheck. He's dominating the position but he's already lost any fan he had gained coming into the fight. He's probably going to win and everyone's going to want to see GSP beat the hell out of him.

ROUND THREE: Daley pushes forward early again and can't connect on a combo. Koscheck moved away from the power shot. Daley threw a high kick but it was half hearted and didn't land. Koscheck punched Daley's thigh. Daley landed a big uppercut and a knee as Koscheck shot in. Koscheck stayed on him and grabbed a single leg and took Daley down again into half guard. He's content to just hold control and he's not trying to finish at all. He lands a punch keeps control as Daley gets back to half guard. The crowd boos as Koscheck rides out the round in half guard to a clear decision.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Koscheck. He didn't even try to finish in the third despite his position.

WINNER: Koscheck via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

POST FIGHT: After Koscheck stood up and raised his arms Daley followed him and landed a sucker punch. Dan Miragliotta pulled him away and said "you're a professional, are you kidding me?" Rogan and Goldberg talked about how Daley's going to get suspended, and he absolutely should be, and Rogan joked that it was the best punch he landed.

Koscheck riled up the crowd some more and said the Penguins would beat the Canadiens next week and then said he'd beat St. Pierre so they would lose twice. Man, Koscheck definitely showed Daley who the pussy was in this fight.

STAR RATING: (*) Screw that fight and Josh Koscheck. He dominated Paul Daley with his wrestling, but pulled a ridiculous stunt with a faked illegal blow and simply rode to the decision with his position despite many chances to finish the fight. That was just awful, and then Daley was disgraceful after the fight in frustration with that sucker punch. It may have been something everyone wanted to do after that fight, but it was unacceptable and he should be suspended.

RAMIFICATIONS: Well, Koscheck *earned* a Title shot with that victory, but all he did was get everyone on GSP's side further for that rematch later this year. At least he'll have a lot of heat against him and people will pay to see him lose.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FIVE: LYOTO MACHIDA VS. MAURICIO "SHOGUN" RUA (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

PRE FIGHT: Machida said people say Shogun showed how to beat him, but then why didn't he beat him. Time for talk is over, the rematch is on!

Machida landed a knee to the body and Shogun dropped him with a right. He got down into mount and landed a number of punches and knocked Machida out cold! Holy shit! No controversy this time, not at all. Wow. The replay showed Shogun caught him with a right to the temple and knocked him out cold with a few punches on the ground. That was vicious and a spectacular victory for Shogun to get the Title belt that should have been his in October.

WINNER: Rua via KO at 3:35 of the first round

POST FIGHT: Shogun was all smiles as he was announced the winner and Dana White put the belt around his waist. Rua said Lyoto's a great fighter and he didn't work as much on his kicks. Rua congratulated the mother's in the world for mother's day tomorrow. They showed Machida's face and it was broken. Holy hell was that welt nasty.

STAR RATING: (****) That was an amazing performance from Shogun to get the belt that should have been his in October. I will gladly eat crow as I undersold him for this fight, and he's more than a deserving Champion. Awesome KO against the previously undefeated Machida.

RAMIFICATIONS: The division got shaken up quite a bit here with such a dominating win by Shogun. The winner of Rampage vs. Rashad will likely get the next fight, and if Rashad loses he'll have a rematch with Machida in the works. It also opens things up for Anderson Silva to make the permanent move to 205 and make a Title run.

ROUND TWO: Davis dropped Goulet early with a punch and got into his guard and landed some nice ground and pound. Goulet scrambles and gets back to his feet. Davis lands a big punch and Goulet goes down hard and it's all over as the ref comes in and stops it. It was an uppercut to the jaw there.

WINNER: Davis via TKO 1:23 of the second round

POST FIGHT: Davis thanked his trainers and coaches. He thanked the fans in the crowd and said everyone's been nice to him.

STAR RATING: (**) It was a bit sloppy at times, but that was a nice win for Davis. He probably should have pulled off the win earlier against a fighter of Goulet's caliber, but he did what he needed to do here.

UNAIRED PRELIM RESULTS:

• John Salter def. Jason MacDonald via TKO (injury) - Round 1, 2:42
• Mike Guymon def. Yoshiyuki Yoshida via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
