Well I think I've made everyone wait sufficiently to find out the results. I can just picture everyone foaming at the mouth with
anticipation to know how well they did last Saturday. For the first time in V3.0, a champion was able to successfully defend his title. Which champ was it? Let's find out together...
Prediction Contest:
Our own title tilt saw champion Gavin "Seriously this guy is from Australia" Byrne vs. Micky "Savant" Wan. Despite facing stiff competition, Byrne had his finest hour at UFC 88, not only defending his belt, but outperforming every single entrant in the prediction contest. He was able to correctly predict seven out of nine fights, two better than grizzled vet Wan, who went 5-4. No one else in the pool predicted more than six fights correctly. Therefore, your winner, and STILL MMATorch Prediction Champion...Gavin Byrne!
In the pool it was quite the battle. There was only a two fight difference between the top and bottom. In the end, it came down to a five-way tie for the #1 contender spot, so we went to the tie-breakers. I started to worry that we were going to have ourselves a triple threat title fight at the next event, as both Scott Hart and Rich Boles were able to correctly predict 4 methods/rounds. It wasn't to be though, as exiting Betting Champ Jerry Cattelane blew everyone away with seven, SEVEN methods/rounds predicted correctly. You'll see everyone's results below (the number in parentheses is the tie-breaker number for the top performers), but just to recap; Gavin Byrne will defend his title THIS Wednesday at Ultimate Fight Night Live against Jerry "MD" Cattelane.
RESULTS:
Jerry Cattelane 6-3 (7)
Scott Hart 6-3 (4)
Rich Boles 6-3 (4)
The man known simply as...Nut 6-3 (3)
Frank Hyden 6-3 (3)
Jamie Penick 5-4
Brian Fuller 5-4
Marcio Lourenco 5-4
Matt Pelkey 5-4
Tyson Kubas 4-5
Brian Murphy 4-5
Chris Gawn 4-5
Betting Contest:
Well as you could probably have figured out by now, our betting Champ was as successful as our Prediction Champ. In an old-school match-up Champion Jerry "MD" Cattelane went to battle with Rich "Bolesy" Boles. Neither man turned a profit, but Boles was able to best Cattelane on this occasion. Jerry only bet one fight correctly; a $300 bet on Jason McDonald which netted him a payout of $540, but a net loss of $460. Boles was a bit more successful with a $100 bet on McDonald and a $400 bet on Nate Marquardt. The payouts were $180 and $720 respectively for a total of $900. So your winner...and NEW MMATorch Betting Champion Rich Booooooles!
It wasn't a proud day for the pool as only three men, Antonio "The Dark Monster" Bruzer, Nut, and Chris Gawn were able to turn a profit, and they were modest profits at that. Bruzer was the top performer, capturing the #1 contender spot and the right to take on Rich Boles later this week. Congrats to the Monster. Below is a brief breakdown of everyone's results.
