FIGHT ONE: MITCH CLARKE VS. JOHN CHOLISH
ROUND ONE: Big John McCarthy is your ref. Brittney Palmer is your ring girl. Mitch Clarke is your Canadian. A few exchanges during the first 2 minutes. Cholish clearly would prefer to get this to the ground. Clarke gets Cholish's back about 2 minutes in, Cholish rolls for a kneebar but winds up in Clarke's guard. Cholish gets to posture up and throws a decent short elbow. Cholish backs out of guard and lets Clarke up with 1:40 left in the round. Cholish lands a nice combination with his fists. Clarke's pace is slowing down a little while Cholish is dancing. Cholish's jabs are starting to find a home. 10-9 Cholish
ROUND TWO: Cholish lands a nice right hand 10 seconds in. Clarke keeps coming forward, though. Clarke catches a Cholish kick, but then eats a knee when he pulls Cholish close. Clarke's laboring a little bit, and looks stiff. Cholish clinches, pushes Clarke against the cage, but nothing much comes of it as they separate. Cholish's counter rights are starting to land more frequently. Clarke keeps coming forward, Cholish keeps circling as the round hits the halfway point. Cholish freezes Clarke for a split second with a big right. Cholish shoots and gets an easy takedown. In Clarke's guard, up against the cage. Clarke's trying to walk up the cage but he's really breathing hard. Clarke rolled out, gets to his feet, takes Cholish down, but Cholish scrambles and uses a kimura to backmount Clarke. Full body lock, and he's pounding him out. Fight is over. that transition from Clarke was fantastic.
WINNER: John Cholish by TKO at 4:36 of Round 2.
STAR RATING: (**) Other than the scramble that led to the back mount, there wasn't much to see here.
RAMIFICATIONS: Cholish will get another fight, but he's wearing a Yankees hat so I will boo him lustily. Clarke's Canadian, and the UC is returning to Montreal soon, so he might be safe.
FIGHT TWO: JAKE HECHT VS. RICH ATTONITO
ROUND ONE: Josh Rosenthal is the referee for this welterweight fight. Hecht is making his UFC debut, and comes out with a really nice leg kick. Attonito lands a nice right hand that backs Hecht up a step or two. Hecht is throwin a few different kicks so far, inclusing a few straight kicks to the knee. Attonito gets a takedown and lands in half-guard. Loses the position and winds up in full guard. Hecht is throwing more strikes from the bottom than Attonito is from the top. Hecht is looking for submisisons, but Attonito isn't giving him anything. 2 minutes left. Attonito has been sneaking a decent right hand every 30 seconds or so.Attonito took advantage of Hecht's activity and gets side control, but then jumps into half guard. 30 seconds left, and Attonito's starting to land a little more now. 10-9 Attonito Hecht looked good on the bottom at first, but Attonito took command later on.
ROUND TWO: Hecht lands a left hook early. Shoots, gets stuffed. Attonito presses Hecht into the cage, and drops down for a single. He's dogged in his pursuit of the takedown, but eats a couple huge elbows to the side of his head while trying for the takedown. Attonito crumples to the ground and Hecht gets on top of him and pounds out Attonito just like that. Wow! Attonito's bleeding badly from the back of his head.
WINNER: Jake Hecht by TKO at 1:10 of Round 2.
STAR RATING: (**) That was a finish you don't see every day. another memorable second round finish in an otherwise unmemorable fight.
RAMIFICATIONS: Rich Attonito might have to get used to fighting in Canada, as Mark Pavelich is on line 1.
FIGHT THREE: NIK LENTZ VS. MARK BOCEK
ROUND ONE: The Toronto native Bocek came out to the first big pop of the evening. Crowd pop, that is. Bocek is a black belt in both jiu-jitsu and in kempo karate. I didn't know about the kempo karate black belt. And dude, Bockek as a 75" reach. Who knew? Herb Dean is your referee for this lightweight fight. Bocek comes out aggressive, grabs a clinch and they fight for position up against the fence. Bocek lands a knee to the body, and then gets a takedown a few moments later. Bocek avoids a guillotine attempt and ends up in guard. Moves to half guard, and Lentz grans a guillotine. His hands are connected, but Bocek gets out of it. Lentz has it again, and loses it again. That might have worked on a lesser grappler than Bocek. Bocek is trying fruitlessly to pass Lentz' guard. 2 mintues left. Bocek frees up his right arm long enough to land a couple of forearms. Bocek pases to side control, but Lentz managed to get it back to half guard pretty smoothly. Bocek 10-9.
ROUND TWO: Nice left to the body by Bocek. Follows up with a failed takedown attempt. Bocek lands a head kick, slips, and Lentz pounces. They wind up in kind of a reverse smell my butt position. Bocek winds up on top in Lentz' open guard. Lentz is looking for submissions from the bottom so far tonight. Bocek is going a very good job of keeping control over Lentz. Bocek is starting to land a couple of elbows, but not at risk of losing position. 2:15 left. Lentz is really being smothered now. Lentz is trying to scoot up, but Bocek won't give him the chance. Nice upkick by Lentz, but Bocek was unfazed. Lentz garbs Bocek's neck, and has a much deeper guillotine than he had any time in the first. Bocek escapes, to the crowd's approval. That was tight, but Bocek is still on top. The fights gets to standing for the last 20 seconds. 10-9 Bocek
ROUND THREE: Bocek shoots a double and gets it. Lentz is going for the neck again. Lentz gives it up. It's seems to be literally the only thing he knows how to do from his back. Bocek's content to pound away from inside Lentz' guard, just like the first two rounds. Lentz is going for Bocek's neck again, but Bocek's comfortable. Lentz uses the position to get the fight back to standing. Nice uppercut by Lentz. Bocek shoos a short double leg, gets the takedown, and Lentz goes for Bocek's neck. Again. Bocek gets out. Again. It's like he knows how to defend the guillotine or something. Bocek's throwing elbows again. this fight does kind of suck. Give Lentz credit for going for submissions, but he's a one trick pony off of his back. 10-9 Bocek
WINNER: Mark Bocek by Unanimous Decision (30-27, x3) A case could be made for Lentz getting round 2, but if the guillotines were scaring Bocek he would have tried harder to avoid getting into that position in the first place.
STAR RATING: (*+) Very dull fight.
RAMIFICATIONS: Bocek doesn't move up much with this win because of it's lack of entertainment. This is Lentz' first loss in the UFC, so he's not likely to be cut. That said, if he loses his next fight, he'll be on the undercard of Andrei Arlovski's next fight.
