UFC 137: PENN VS. DIAZ
OCTOBER 29, 2011
LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan open up the Spike broadcast discussing the fights to come on pay-per-view before breaking down the two fights scheduled for this "Prelims Live" broadcast. Should be a very good televised card tonight.

FIGHT ONE: TYSON GRIFFIN VS. BART PALASZEWSKI (149 LB. CATCHWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Palaszewski landed a couple of early jabs as he walked forward but Griffin tagged him with a nice right. Griffin pressed him back with another overhand right that landed to the body. Griffin landed a nice leg kick. Palaszewski landed a short uppercut as he moved in forward. Griffin landed a good leg kick after a feinted left. Griffin landed a hard straight right after Palaszewski got in a jab. Griffin landed a punch to the body. Palaszewski tagged Griffin and started unloading bombs against the cage. Griffin tried to cover up but finally got dropped and the ref had to step in. Huge killer instinct from Palaszewski there. He tagged him with consecutive left hooks and immediately pounced on the cage. Big finish in his UFC debut.

WINNER: Palaszewski via KO at 2:45 of the first round

POST FIGHT: Palaszewski called the win a dream come true and then into the camera told his daughter to go to bed now. He said he'd been preparing by bringing in guys Griffin's size. He talked about picking his spots and said he though he brought both hands, but said it was "so worth it."

STAR RATING: (**+) Great knockout finish by Palaszewski. It was a fairly even fight for the first two minutes with both getting in some punches, but as soon as he landed that first left hook on Griffin, he just completely broke him down to get the win. Awesome finish and a very good start to Palaszewski's featherweight career in the UFC.

RAMIFICATIONS: Palaszewski made a statement in that fight, and he'll get a good featherweight matchup his next time out. As for Griffin, this could be his final fight in the UFC. He had lost three straight prior to his last decision win, and with missing weight by an inexcusable three pounds it probably doesn't sit well with the UFC. Not a good night for him.

FIGHT TWO: DONALD CERRONE VS. DENNIS SIVER (LIGHTWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Cerrone landed a nice kick to the body to start off, and they traded punches in the center. Siver threw a kick high and Cerrone landed another one to the body. Siver landed a straight kick to the chest. He got in with another leg kick but ate a short combo from Cerrone. Cerrone landed a body kick and then cracked Siver with a head kick. Siver tried to recover with a takedown attempt and ate an uppercut. He staggered to a clinch and pressed Cerrone to the cage. Siver threw a knee and recovered a bit. Cerrone broke free from the clinch. Siver landed a hard left. Cerrone stalked and threw another high kick. He tagged Siver again with a right and took his back. He grabbed a rear naked choke and quickly forced the tap. Cerrone just keeps getting better.

WINNER: Cerrone via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:22 of the first round

POST FIGHT: Cerrone said he's just there to keep fighting and said he wanted to get back in as early as December. He said he wished he had more power in the head kick that hurt Siver at first. Cerrone said he's going to go be a pirate for halloween.

STAR RATING: (***) That was just a fantastic display from Cerrone. Siver is no joke, and Cerrone hurt him on the feet and then finished with his submission game. That really couldn't have gone any better for him.

RAMIFICATIONS: Well, if Clay Guida defeats Ben Henderson and it's anything but thrilling, Cerrone may have claimed the next Lightweight Title shot for himself. If Henderson wins that fight he'll get the next shot, but Cerrone has made his case with his sixth straight win and fourth in the UFC.

-With time left before the pay-per-view broadcast, they re-air the Brandon Vera-Eliot Marshall bout from the Facebook prelims.

======PAY-PER-VIEW BROADCAST======

-Goldberg and Rogan welcome the pay-per-view audience discussing the attributes of tonight's main event competitors. They run down the heavyweight co-main event, and Goldberg messes up the intro to the video package by introducing the "other" heavyweight bout as it mentions the bantamweight fight between Scott Jorgensen and Jeff Curran first before Cro Cop-Nelson. First pay-per-view fight tonight will be the anticipated debut of Hatsu Hioki.

FIGHT THREE: HATSU HIOKI VS. GEORGE ROOP (FEATHERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Hioki threw an early high kick that landed lightly. Both circled each other in the center. Roop threw a high kick that grazed Hioki. Roop landed a hard straight right. He threw another high kick. Hioki tried to walk him down and ate a couple of punches. Roop landed an inadvertent low kick and Hioki took some time to recover. Hioki went back to stalking as they restarted. Hioki caught a kick and tried to trip Roop up. They traded shots as Roop got loose. Hioki got in close and grabbed the clinch. Hioki pulled off a very nice throw finally into side control with a minute left in the round. Roop tried to scramble and Hioki almost gained mount. Hioki backed out of the guard and Roop popped to his feet. They ended the round in the clinch.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Hioki. He controlled the position in the clinch and scored the takedown into positional control, though Roop did score a nice punch early.

ROUND TWO: Roop landed an early combo and pressed Hioki back. Roop landed a hard punch to the body a minute into the round. Hioki threw a leg kick and ate another body punch. Hioki got a clinch in the center and took Roop down into full mount. He moved to side control as Roop was escaping the mount. Hioki attacked Roop's right arm but Roop got it loose. Hioki transitioned back to the mount in impressive fashion. Roop tried to break free, but Hioki held himself strong. Roop continued to defend as Hioki held control. Roop finally got loose. He landed an upkick and got himself back to his feet and aggressively went after Hioki to end the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Hioki. He's dominating the position in the fight, but Roop continues to defend well and isn't giving him openings to finish.

ROUND THREE: Roop came right out and took Hioki down, but popped right back up. Hioki came forward but ate a flying knee from Roop. It didn't seem to faze him much. Hioki grabbed a clinch on the cage a minute into the round. The two battled against the cage in the clinch and Roop landed a nice knee. Hioki landed a knee to the body and turned Roop back around. Roop landed a foot stomp. Roop continued landing short strikes as he held Hioki on the cage and they were finally separated with two minutes. Roop ducked in and got a takedown of his own. Hioki tried to sneak a leg up but Roop held him down in guard. Hioki again tried to get his legs up for some type of submission attempt. He landed a couple of elbows from the bottom. Roop picked him up for a short distance slam. He ended the round in Hioki's guard.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Roop. He turned the takedown game around on Hioki at the end, and had the better of the striking exchanges all fight. This one will come down to a close first round, and the decision could go either way here.

Penick's Final Score: 29-28 Hioki

WINNER: Hioki via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

POST FIGHT: The crowd booed the decision. Hioki said he was a little surprised by the decision, and said Roop was stronger than he expected. He then said Japanese MMA is not dead.

STAR RATING: (**) It was a very close fight, and Roop gave Hioki a very tough debut. I don't know that the debut is indicative of what Hioki can do in the U.S., but it certainly wasn't his most impressive performance.

RAMIFICATIONS: Roop doesn't lose much from this. It's a setback, sure, but he fared well against a fighter many considered to be perhaps the #2 featherweight in the world. Because of that lofty ranking, the win for Hioki won't look that impressive, but he pulled off a win in his debut and can try to move on from the Octagon "jitters" in his next appearance.

FIGHT FOUR: SCOTT JORGENSEN VS. JEFF CURRAN (BANTAMWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Curran landed an early jab as both came to the center. Curran landed a leg kick. Jorgensen popped in with a jab. Curran landed a right and ate a counter punch from Jorgensen. He landed an inside leg kick and swung wildly. Jorgensen shot in and scored his third takedown of the round. He rode out the round in guard.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Jorgensen. He scored three takedowns, and though he didn't do a ton of damage he scored enough combined with the positional advantage to take the frame.

ROUND TWO: Jorgensen started off scoring with his jab. Curran landed a couple of power shots but Jorgensen blocked them. Curran shot and Jorgensen sprawled and then landed a bunch of knees standing. He drove Curran to the cage and continued landing knees. Jorgensen continued the attack with the front head lock. Curran continued to try to stifle Jorgensen, but Jorgensen landed some good strikes in the guard. Curran rolled out and Jorgensen grabbed a single leg. Curran landed some body punches as the round ended.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Jorgensen. Curran is very good off his back, and he's not letting Jorgensen do much on top, but Jorgensen is landing with position and scoring the takedowns, and it's got him ahead after two.

ROUND THREE: Curran threw a short combo early and Jorgensen covered up. Jorgensen landed a nice left. Curran landed a nice right, but Jorgensen continued moving forward. He landed a jab. He landed another one nicely. Curran got in a nice right. Curran landed a few strikes and Jorgensen returned favor. Curran's nose began bleeding. Both fighters threw a lot of punches but both were also blocking most of them. They clinched and Jorgensen scored with some nice knees to the legs and body. Curran landed a couple of good knees of his own. Jorgensen landed a few more knees and stayed on Curran as he tried to trip him. Curran broke free with a little over a minute left. Curran got in a nice two punch combo. Jorgensen landed a hard leg kick inside. Jorgensen landed a hard jab and then a right. Curran shot in, Jorgensen sprawled and then turned him over into side control. He landed a couple of shots from the top to end the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Jorgensen. That was a much more even round, but Jorgensen scored on a comparable number of strikes as Curran, and then ended the fight in side control.

WINNER: Jorgensen via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (**) Another solid, close fight, but the technical battle at times didn't make for the most exciting affair. Still, Jorgensen looked good against a very tough veteran fighter in Curran, and picked up another big win on his path toward a second title shot.

RAMIFICATIONS: Curran should get another fight in the UFC, because Jorgensen is a top guy and he pushed him well in that fight. Jorgensen added another good name to his record, and moves another step up the ladder.

FIGHT FIVE: MIRKO CRO COP VS. ROY NELSON (HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Both fighters circled early and Nelson missed on a big overhand right and spun around. Nelson definitely cut some fat between fights. Nelson threw a kick of his own high and followed it with a right. The round ended with them squaring off.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Nelson. Solid start for "Big Country", as he scored with some nice strikes, reacted well to getting hit by Cro Cop, and spent some time in top control on the ground.

ROUND TWO: Nelson came forward immediately and landed an early right. He cracked Cro Cop with a right, but then slipped. Cro Cop then went on the offensive on the cage. Nelson covered up nicely, but Cro Cop landed a number of good strikes, including a few to the body. Nelson went back to stalking. Cro Cop backed him off with a left. Cro Cop tried to buck him off but Nelson continue to land strikes in the mounted crucifix. Cro Cop again tried to buck him out and Nelson added a few elbows. Cro Cop survived the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Nelson. After absorbing a ridiculous barrage from Cro Cop early, Nelson stole the round back with the final minute in the mounted crucifix. Very fun fight here so far.

ROUND THREE: Nelson again began the round stalking. Nelson landed a kick to the body of Cro Cop. Cro Cop continued circling but backing away as well. Nelson hit him with a nice straight right. He missed on an elbow but went back to stalking. He shot in and backed off. He hurt Cro Cop with a right and Cro Cop dropped down. Nelson took his back with both hooks in and landed a few big strikes to the side of the head to force the stoppage. Very nice performance from Nelson tonight.

WINNER: Nelson via TKO at 1:30 of the third round

POST FIGHT: Nelson said it was awesome to compete with a legend. He said he was going to do a Chael Sonnen and call someone out. He said he wanted the Championship, because he's "getting too old for this s***." Cro Cop was then interviewed and reiterated that this was his farewell fight, but unfortunately he couldn't go out with a victory. He apologized for "blowing up" his chances in the UFC.

STAR RATING: (***) That was just an awesome heavyweight fight. Cro Cop looked as competitive as he has in any of his recent fights, and gave Nelson a hell of a beating against the cage in the second round. Nelson is just capable of taking inhuman levels of punishment in the cage, and he looked as good as he has in the Octagon himself. They each erased the memory of their most recent fights, and put in a great showing for the fans.

RAMIFICATIONS: Nelson keeps himself alive in the UFC, and it's time for Cro Cop to be done. He's had a storied career, and he looked as good as he has recently in this fight, but it wasn't enough. But at least he went out on his shield.

FIGHT SIX: CHEICK KONGO VS. MATT MITRIONE (HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Mitrione walked to the center of the cage early with his hands down. Tentative start early for both. Mitrione tried to pop in with a left but it was blocked and he backed off. They traded punches. Mitrione missed a combo and the round came to an end to boos.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-10. That was one of the least active rounds in recent memory in the UFC. Both fighters were extremely tentative, and neither wanted to engage first.

ROUND TWO: Mitrione came ahead again, and he landed a good left early. Kongo landed a couple of leg kicks. Mitrione landed a left again. Kongo continued throwing the leg kicks but Mitrione continued walking in. MItrione blocked a right and landed one of his own. More kicks landed from Kongo. Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Kongo. Mitrione looked awful on the ground there, and it was an ugly finish to what was not a good fight.

Penick's Final Score: 29-29 draw

WINNER: Kongo via unanimous decision (30-28, 30-27, 29-28)

STAR RATING: (*) That was not a good fight at all. Neither fighter did a thing in the first round, and while I'm not entirely sure how Kongo took the second, it's not as if Mitrione was on fire in that round either. Kongo took the only clear round in the third, but neither looked good in that fight.

RAMIFICATIONS: Mitrione's quick ascent up the ladder is unceremoniously halted, but Kongo doesn't really shoot up very far himself. Mitrione still has plenty of holes in his game because he hasn't been in the sport that long, and he just didn't manage to do a whole lot in that fight. Kongo looked tentative and afraid to engage through two rounds before finally bringing the fight to the ground in the third, so it wasn't a great night for him either, despite the win.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Diaz. He turned on the assault that round, and Penn is in a lot of trouble into the third round. Diaz's accumulated punishment is taking its toll.

Diaz stuffed it and turned him around and landed a flurry. Diaz peppered Penn with shots on the cage. They traded punches in the center. Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Diaz. Penn was a lot more spirited than he should have been expected after the second round beating, but Diaz kept the pressure on and battered Penn for five more minutes. Excellent fight and it's a damn shame that's all we get from it.

WINNER: Diaz via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-28)

POST FIGHT: Diaz screamed into the camera "Where you at, Georges? Where you at motherf***er?" Diaz said he doesn't think GSP is hurt and said he thinks he's scared. GSP shook his head cageside. The crowd busted out into a "GSP" chant. Penn was then interviewed and he said he can't keep doing this anymore and said it's the last time Rogan has seen him in the cage.

STAR RATING: (****) That was a fantastic main event fight, and it's really too bad we only got three rounds of that. That was just a great clash back and forth, and Diaz proved himself against a top level competitor in that one. He still may need one more fight, or he'll need to stay on the sidelines for a bit, but the UFC won't have a problem selling him in a title fight again.

RAMIFICATIONS: Well, Diaz is deserving of a title shot, and apparently Penn just retired. That's about what you need to know from that fight.
