Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira's removal from the UFC 134 card next month - leading to Dan MIller stepping in on short notice to face Rousimar Palhares - came not because of an injury, but because Ferreira refused to sign a bout agreement for the fight, according to a report from Sherdog.com.
Ferreira's manager, Josef Borges, revealed that not only was Ferreira removed from the card, but he was released from the organization as well.
"Unfortunately, Cacareco was released by the UFC when he refused to sign the contract to fight against Toquinho," Borges stated. "He was called to fight at 'UFC Rio' in March, and when he found out that the opponent was Palhares, he started to claim difficulties with making weight. Ferreira then said it was better for him not to sign the contract, and he didn't decide what to do until, eventually, the UFC got tired of waiting and released him via letter."
Ferreira had pulled out of a previously scheduled bout with Palhares as well, though he had a much more legitimate claim with the tragic flood that devastated parts of Brazil earlier this year. He had appeared once in the UFC, losing in the first round to Vladimir Matyushenko last year, and Borges said he then began turning in "lazy performances" that led to a release from the Chute Box Academy back in January.
"[Cacareco] showed no interest in training, even when he signed with the UFC after almost a year of trying to convince [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva to give him a shot," Borges said. "He knew I was close to making the deal for him, and he still went on a TV show to blame his unluckiness."
"The result of the fight shows everything. He was completely out of shape and was easily defeated by Matyushenko. The UFC gave him another shot, extended his contract, and the other issues happened in sequence."
Penick's Analysis: This is a case of a fighter being his own worst enemy, and failing to do what was expected of him in order to maintain a spot on the UFC's roster. For whatever reason, Ferreira just didn't have his head or his heart in doing what he was supposed to do, and in stringing the UFC along on a fight with a fellow Brazilian and then refusing to sign his bout agreement, it led to him angering the organization and this was the course of action they were going to take. It's an unfortunate fizzle out for him, but he brought it on himself.
