With his knockout win over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 128 last month, former NFL-player Brendan Schaub picked up his fourth straight win in the UFC and moved his career record to 8-1. Of his eight wins, he's stopped seven by knockout or TKO, and he's now looking for another step up in the division.
Schaub believes he's now firmly established himself as a top ten heavyweight, and in an interview with MMAWeekly.com he listed a few names for who he'd like to face next.
"There's a lot of interesting matches," he said. "You look at the Frank Mir-Roy [Nelson fight], the winner of that could potentially be an opponent. Big Nog in Brazil. There’s a ton of them out there, so we’ll see what Joe Silva comes up with... I just want to fight the biggest names out there."
The possibility of a fight against Nogueira is one that is especially exciting to Schaub, and a chance to have that fight in front of a raucous pro-Nogueira crowd in Brazil is something he'd be willing to take.
"That would be intense,” Schaub said about that fight. "When that was brought up or mentioned to me a lot of my teammates and coaches were like 'man, I don't know if I'd do that, just to go out to Brazil and fight Nog in his hometown, I think it's a huge risk,' but I'll be that guy if they want me to be that guy."
Penick's Analysis: Schaub's fight with Cro Cop wasn't his most impressive performance, but that's because Cro Cop, despite being on the downside of his career, can still stifle fighters and make for a difficult opponent to put down. But Schaub got the job done, and he'd be as good an opponent as any for Big Nog in Brazil. I'd love to see that fight come to fruition, and if Nogueira can make his return to action by the end of August that would be a great fight. But if that can't happen, then a shot at Mir or a chance for a rematch with Nelson would both be excellent fights as well.
