A fight that was originally scheduled for UFC on Versus 3 last month will now take place at UFC 132 in July, as the UFC on Tuesday announced that featherweights Cub Swanson and Erik Koch will meet on the card.
Both fighters were removed from the Versus card in Louisville after an injury to Swanson pulled him out of the fight. Koch was then pulled from the event altogether and matched up with Raphael Assuncao at UFC 128 later in the month.
Koch, a 22-year-old fighting out of Duke Roufus' gym in Milwaukee, Wis., moved his record to 12-1 in that bout with Assuncao, earning a knockout victory that netted him a nice "Knockout of the Night" bonus in his UFC debut. His Zuffa career has gone quite well, as he sports a 4-1 mark between the WEC and the UFC, with three of those victories coming by stoppage in the first round.
Swanson will make his UFC debut on this card after his training injury delayed him entering the organization. A staple of the WEC for almost four years, Swanson went 5-3 over his eight fights in the UFC's sister organization, finishing it up with a split decision victory at WEC 52 last November over Mackens Semerzier that earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus.
UFC 132 takes place on July 2 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, headlined by the very first UFC Bantamweight Title fight on a UFC card between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.
Penick's Analysis: This was an excellent fight for the UFC on Versus card and it remains a very good fight for this event as well. Swanson is typically in entertaining fights, and Koch has shown himself to be an excellent young featherweight, so this fight is another chance for him to move up the ladder in the division. It's just a great fight between two entertaining featherweights and is a great addition to this card.
