Phil Davis will still get an opportunity to fight in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto this April, as MMAJunkie.com reports that he will now meet Jason Brilz on the UFC 129 card.
Davis was originally scheduled to meet Matt Hamill on the card, but Hamill was pulled out of the card to replace Thiago Silva against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 130 in May. Davis brings an undefeated 8-0 record into this bout, including four straight wins in the UFC. In his last bout, Davis pulled off an impressive modified hammerlock on Tim Boetsch to earn his third career submission victory.
Brilz returns for the first time since his split decision loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 114 last May. Brilz was scheduled to return in November, but an injury kept him on the sidelines. With an 18-3-1 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the UFC, Brilz will be looking to make a bigger statement than in his performance against "Lil Nog."
UFC 129 takes place from the Rogers Centre on April 30, headlined by the Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields.
Penick's Analysis: This is a very good replacement fight with Hamill being removed. Brilz looked great against Nogueira in a losing effort last year, a fight many believed he should have won, so he makes a very solid opponent for Davis here. Davis is an exciting light heavyweight prospect, and this is another big opportunity for him to impress on the biggest stage the UFC has had to date.
