Kenny Florian is set to make his featherweight debut this June, and he's got lofty goals for the division.
According to his manager Malki Kawa, in comments made to MMAWeekly.com, Florian hopes to get a top contender in his first bout in the division, and then hopes to make a quick turnaround for a potential fight with Champ Jose Aldo.
"A top contender. Whoever the No. 1 contender is at that point is the guy I'd like to get,” Kawa stated. "What would be my ideal situation for me is for him to get a fight in June, whoever the No. 1 contender is, win that fight, and then hopefully set something up for Brazil with [Jose] Aldo if the UFC's up for it."
Of course, Aldo needs to get past Mark Hominick on April 30, but if the UFC is up for it should Florian get a win in June, a Florian-Aldo title fight in Brazil at the end of August would be a very big fight for that card.
Penick's Analysis: We argued this last night on our Tuesday Livecast at BlogTalkRadio.com/MMATorch, and I'd be very intrigued to see Kenny Florian against Chad Mendes for a shot against Jose Aldo. Of course, Mendes could also just sit on the sidelines and be next in line, but if the UFC wants to build up their next challenger after Hominick, a win for Florian or Mendes in that fight would accomplish that. It would be a quick turnaround to get that title fight on the Brazil card, but it would make for a very entertaining Featherweight Title fight if it comes together.
