The third bout between Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar is being targeted for the UFC 130 event on Memorial Day weekend, according to a report from MMAWeekly.com.
The two lightweights fought to a draw in their Championship encounter at UFC 125 on New Year's Day, and the exhilarating bout warranted an immediate rematch. However, the fight is not yet set in stone for this date, and will depend upon the health of both fighters after the fight.
Maynard delivered a beating on Edgar in the first round, earning a 10-8 on all three judges' scorecards. Edgar survived the onslaught, and came back to do enough in the fight to win all four remaining rounds on one scorecard and a draw on another. But Edgar suffered a broken nose in the bout, and this booking likely hinges on his timetable for return.
UFC 130 will take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and is also rumored to feature a light heavyweight bout between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Thiago Silva, as well as a heavyweight fight between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson.
Penick's Analysis: This is a perfect slot for this fight considering Edgar's layoff for the nose fracture, and this card is looking like another really big one for the UFC in the first half of 2011. With this title fight, Rampage-Silva and Mir-Nelson, already the main card is one of the strongest of the year so far. This fight itself is going to be great, and it will be good to see more fans appreciate the fight this time around after writing it off as "boring" prior to 125.
