The following are key excerpts from UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and #1 contender Gray Maynard from the post-fight press conference following their split draw at UFC 125.
Gray Maynard:
"I do not want a loss, I want the belt. A draw is a draw. I thought that was my fight and I had the belt."
"F*** I do not want a loss. I thought that was my fight and I had the belt. It sucks that I do not get the next title fight, I worked my butt of for this."
"I thought I won the third for sure, I felt the fifth was even. I really thought that he backed off the fifth. I thought the first round was a 10-7, but could have possibly been a 10-8. I think that the fight could have easily been stopped in the first round. I felt I was going for the home run punch way too much, so I had to ease back a little bit. I had to pick it back up in the third."
"Frankie is a tough kid; I really thought that was my fight. I was really trying to take his head off. I thought that the belt was mine before the judges announced the draw. Even though I got my win bonus and I get my fight of the night bonus, it is not about the money, it is about being the best."
"Round two he had a takedown and I think that gave him the round, but I really thought that was my fight."
Frankie Edgar:
"He of course caught me with that big shot in the first, but I felt as if I won the last four rounds. It was a great fight; it was exciting for the fans and me, so it was a win-win."
"I just think that my confidence is getting more and more and I think that I can take anybody down. I am a MMA fighter so we train for everything. I was rocked in the first, but I went to my corner and they got me straight and supported me and I got back out there."
"It sucks to end a fight in a draw, it is bittersweet. I didn't lose, but I didn't win either. A decisive win would have been better for me, but as long as my team is behind me I am fine."
"If it was up to me, I would rather fight Gray again. He has a win over me and now we have a draw so I would like some closure to this. If I had the opportunity I would fight him again."
"I really thought that I won the fight, the first round of course I did not, but I think that I won all the other rounds. The ref was talking to me the whole time and I do not think that he was on verge of stopping it at any time."
"I really thought that I had won the fight before the judges announced the draw; I did not think there was going to be a draw."
"Gray is a great wrestler; I have pretty good wrestling myself. It was very disappointing to get a draw, I just threw the belt over my shoulder out of frustration."
