Saturday's UFC 123 event provided a very good night of fights for the fans in Detroit, but there was one fight that brought down the ire of the crowd on the main card: Gerald Harris vs. Maiquel Falcao.
Falcao was making his UFC debut, and showed off some impressive skills at the end of the first round and some time in the second, but the third round was one of the worst in rounds in the UFC in recent memory.
Falcao was well ahead on the judges scorecards heading into the third round, so he fought not to lose, and the two fighters failed to do much of anything, drawing heavy boos from the Detroit crowd. And Falcao's new employer wasn't very happy with his lack of effort in said round.
"This isn't the f***ing Ultimate Staring Competition, it's the Ultimate Fighting Championship," White said of the bout after the event. "I'll take a guy who loses a dog fight any day of the week over a guy who stares at somebody for five f***ing minutes."
But, while he was disappointed in Falcao for the third round, he said he liked what he saw in other parts of the fight, and Falcao will get another chance to make an impression on the UFC and its fans.
Penick's Analysis: Harris and Falcao didn't do themselves any favors with that awful third round, and drawing the ire of not only the fans but the UFC President isn't going to do much to give you job security. If Falcao has a repeat performance, even if it's in a victory, the UFC may not decide to keep him under contract. For as much as this is a sport, there is an entertainment aspect to it that fighters need to be conscious of, and Falcao and Harris weren't keeping that in mind in the third round. Falcao showed some great stuff in the four minutes of action provided in the 11 minute fight, and hopefully we'll be able to see more of that out of him in his next fight.
