A featherweight bout between Mark Hominick and George Roop could be coming to the January 22 UFC Fight for the Troops 2 event, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.
The fight hinges upon whether or not Hominick's hand injury, suffered in his WEC 51 victory over Leonard Garcia, is healed in time for him to fully train for the fight.
It actually marks a return to the UFC for both fighters, who had previously competed in the organization's lightweight division before dropping down to 145 lbs. Hominick was actually successful in his two bouts in the UFC, defeating Yves Edwards by submission and Jorge Gurgel by decision in 2006.
His WEC career got off to a rocky start, as his first two appearances resulted in defeat, but he's now won four straight fights, including three in the blue cage.
Roop competed on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter, but his UFC career resulted in a 1-2 record and a release from the organization. After winning a fight outside of the Zuffa umbrella, he debuted in the bantamweight division in a loss to Eddie Wineland in the WEC. He jumped back up to the featherweight division and drew with Garcia before knocking out "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung at WEC 51 in September.
UFC Fight for the Troops 2 is expected to take place from Fort Hood, Texas, headlined by a lightweight bout between Kenny Florian and Evan Dunham. The event will air on Spike TV.
Penick's Analysis: This is another fight that makes sense with Roop fighting to a draw with Garcia and defeating Jung. Hominick was passed over for the first UFC title shot against Jose Aldo, but a win over Roop could help him keep his place in line. It's a solid featherweight addition to this card, and with their recent wins this fight will probably wind up on the Spike broadcast if Hominick's hand allows him to take the fight.
