Both Kenny Florian and B.J. Penn were offered a bout with each other on November's UFC 123 event, but a slight injury suffered in training kept him from being able to return that early, according to a report from MMAWeekly.com.
Per Florian's manager, Malki Kawa, he got right back into action following his loss to Gray Maynard at UFC 118, and he slightly pulled his hamstring.
"I had texted (UFC president) Dana White letting him know we want to take a fight, we want to get back in there as soon as possible," Kawa said. "What ended up happening, Dana said, 'well perfect, how about Nov. 20 against B.J. Penn?' and I didn't expect them to do November. I thought for sure we were looking at January, maybe early December return."
"What we're hoping for is for a January return. That's what we're targeting, that's what we're hoping for. We don't have an opponent; we don't have one on the horizon. That's a conversation we'll have with Joe Silva, and we'll figure out a list of names and who we can fight and when."
Penick's Analysis: A rematch with Sean Sherk could be a good fight for both fighters, and it would be a good addition to the New Year's Day card if the UFC went that route. Otherwise, a bout with Jim Miller could make sense, or, since both fighters are coming off of losses he could take on Evan Dunham as well. There are certainly plenty of options there.
