Details about Chael Sonnen's failed performance enhancing drug test from his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 117 continue to emerge, as California State Athletic Commission Executive Director George Dodd has made comments to several outlets stating that Sonnen tested positive for a testosterone level "well above" normal.
Sonnen's one year suspension is in place as of September 2, and barring an appeal and a successful resolution he'll be out of action until that date in 2011. The levels being "well above" means the likely cause was a performance-enhancing drug.
Should Sonnen appeal the result within the next 30 days and receive a resolution prior to the end of the year that overturns or reduces his suspension, his bout with Anderson Silva could still potentially take place. However, Dodd stated to MMAJunkie.com that neither Sonnen nor his camp have contacted the Commission as of yet.
Penick's Analysis: It's looking worse and worse for any type of "explaining away" to be done by Sonnen's camp. He still may choose to appeal, and technically the bout with Silva can't be considered off until he either a) doesn't appeal the result or b) the UFC announces otherwise. But it's not looking good at this point.
