Chael Sonnen's rematch with Anderson Silva may need to wait.
According to a report from Sherdog.com, Sonnen has been notified by the California State Athletic Commission that he failed a post-fight drug screening following his loss to Silva at UFC 117 last month in Oakland.
All fighters at the event had passed the "drugs-of-abuse" scans, so Sonnen's failed test was for a performance-enhancing substance. There's no word as to exactly what substance Sonnen tested positive for.
He'll either appeal the decision or face whatever suspension is handed down, but either way the early 2011 rematch will likely no longer take place.
Penick's Analysis: This is extremely disappointing, and unbelievably stupid on Sonnen's part. If he tries to appeal it, there isn't a long history of success in that department, and the appeal process will still keep him out of action and at best delay the Silva rematch even further. In all likelihood, someone else is going to get a shot at Silva, and Sonnen's going to have a long road to rebuild his image. Again, this is extremely disappointing news.
