The UFC announced today the banning of vuvuzelas at this Saturday's UFC 116 pay-per-view event.
The long plastic noise-makers have come into the public consciousness due to their persistent use at this year's World Cup in South Africa. The constant buzzing has annoyed television audiences, players, coaches and pretty much anyone not using one throughout this World Cup.
"This decision was pretty simple for me," UFC President Dana White said in today's press release. “Vuvuzelas make the most horrific sound I’ve ever heard. I’d rather let Brock punch me in the face than hear 15,000 people blow on those things. This is the biggest heavyweight fight we’ve ever done. We’ll make enough noise this weekend when Brock and Shane finally step inside the Octagon."
UFC 116 airs live on Spike TV and pay-per-view this Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by the UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.
Penick's Analysis: It didn't necessarily require a press release, but the fact that those damned Vuvuzelas will not be allowed in the arena in Las Vegas is a good move. Nobody wants to hear them, they're nothing but a distraction and it would have been extremely annoying to hear them during a UFC event.
