Paul Daley did more than lose his fight to Josh Koscheck at UFC 113 in Montreal, he lost his job as well.
After losing a unanimous decision to Koscheck in the co-main event at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday, Daley walked after Koscheck and landed a left hook sucker punch to the face.
The Brit was immediately grabbed by referee Dan Miragliotta and was reprimanded, but the damage had been done. UFC President Dana White announced at the post fight press conference that Daley had been cut because of his actions.
The sucker punch came as frustrations boiled over for Daley. Koscheck admitted to ESPN's MMA Live after the fight that he had been in Daley's ear as the fight was ending and insinuated that he egged him on with some fairly disparaging remarks. This came after three rounds of lay and pray from Koscheck, who had multiple opportunities to finish the fight but felt content to ride out a decision.
It also came after Koscheck went theatrical in the first round and reacted to a missed illegal blow as if he had been smashed square in the face. He milked it for several minutes before the fight restarted.
Unfortunately for Daley, none of that excused his actions, and he goes from being a win away from a Title shot to out of the UFC in one idiotic moment of stupidity.
Penick's Analysis: I still can't believe Daley did that. Even though the crowd was semmingly willing him to do so, and everyone at home probably wanted to as well, it was one of the stupidest things a fighter has ever done in the UFC. The UFC handled this correctly and swiftly, and unlike Strikeforce and the CBS brawl they didn't show a replay of the damned incident and they brought down punishment before the commission even had a chance.
