Former Ultimate Fighter competitor Eliot Marshall has been released by the UFC following his first loss in the Octagon to Vladimir Matyushenko on Sunday's UFC on Versus card.
The cut comes as a surprise considering Marshall was on a three fight win streak to begin his UFC career following his time on the eighth season of TUF.
Talking to MMAJunkie.com about the release, Marshall said, "It is what it is, man. What do you want me to say? It sucks. What can you do? It's my own fault, and that's how it goes... I could have fought better. I could have fought more aggressively. I thought Vladdy wasn't really engaging much; it was hard for me to find my distance with him... I'm disappointed in myself. I didn't fight to the best of my abilities."
Marshall also said while he's disappointed in the release, his goal is to return to the UFC by the fall.
"I'm going to get right back at it, train, fight hopefully in June, fight in July or August, and maybe if I get two good finishes, maybe [I can] fight [in the UFC] in September. I'm going to email Joe Silva every time I fight."
Penick's Analysis: This is a really curious cut. With his last two fights being fairly uninspired performances, it must have just not lived up to whatever expectations the UFC had placed on him in the division. He's likely to pick up the wins he's looking for this summer, as he's a very talented fighter and up until the Matyushenko fight had lost only one fight in his career. Best of luck to him on his path to get back to the Octagon.
