“I’m just really excited to fight [Brandon Vera]. I really have a lot of pride in my stand-up. It’s a lot better than you see in the actual Octagon. You’ve seen about maybe 20 percent of the things that I have in my head and things that I’ve been training... My last two opponents I fought, Jake O’Brien and Matt Hamill, were both guys who I had to stay aware of their double-leg (takedown) so it didn’t really allow me to unleash the type of striking that I wanted to... Fighting a guy like Brandon Vera, I know he’s not big on the double-leg-takedown, so I will just feel a little more free to flow on my feet and pull the trigger on a lot more things that I’m dying to do.”
Penick's Analysis: Jones has clearly not unleashed his full potential, and considering he's only been training for two years it's understandable. The unique offense he's shown off with his grappling and striking thus far has been incredible to watch, and if this is only a tiny taste of the things he's got planned we could be in for a treat next Sunday. Vera's a dangerous fight for him, but Jones may be a more dangerous challenge for Vera just for the simple fact that he's so completely unorthodox. The Versus debut of the UFC is looking like a great four fight card, and this main event especially should be extremely entertaining. At the very least Jones will force Vera to fight a different type of fight than he has in his last few outings.
