Despite an ominous "no comment" from UFC President Dana White when asked about the health status of UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar earlier this week, Lesnar's current battle with diverticulitis will not be the end of his MMA career.
According to one of Lesnar's trainers, University of Minnesota assistant head wrestling coach Marty Morgan, from a report at Sportsnet.ca, the Champ "will fight again. I know that it's just a matter of the public finding out when soon enough."
As far as how far along Lesnar is in his recovery, Morgan is as forthcoming as anyone in the know will be at this time, saying "Everyone's asking about his health. He had a bout with a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract in November, and now we're just kind of working our way to get back to where we need to get back to fight... I don't give more answers than that. Brock don't give more answers, (and) his agents don't give more answers. There's really only a handful of people who know where we're at, whether it's moving forwards or backwards."
So with Frank Mir and Shane Carwin set to face off for the Interim Heavyweight Title in March, the winner will (hopefully) be set to face off with Lesnar before the end of the year at best, and 2011 at worst.
Penick's Analysis: There's been a lot of pessimistic speculation going on about Lesnar's condition and future in the fight game, including what I find to be the unfounded discussion on Lesnar's loyalties to the UFC when looking at his past ventures, so it's nice to get an optimistic outlook after the recent dire straits that have befallen the UFC's biggest pay-per-view draw. Now obviously there's still no word as to how long his recovery will take, but with one of his trainers coming out with the "he will fight again" decree at least the question of "if" should be out of the way and it becomes simply a question of "when?"
