Jake Rosholt has been cut by the UFC after three appearances in the Octagon. The former four time All American and three time NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion announced the cut himself Monday on his Twitter account.
"Not a good day. Just found out I got cut by the UFC," said Rosholt.
The cut comes after his second loss in the Octagon, this one at UFC 106 against Kendall Grove via first round triangle choke.
After a first round guillotine loss to Dan Miller in his UFC debut, Rosholt started to show some promise with a big win over Chris Leben in August; but the loss to Grove, after he had the Ultimate Fighter season three winner on the ropes, was enough for the UFC to give him the axe in a tough middleweight division.
Penick's Analysis: While the cut is somewhat surprising considering the victory over Leben in August, the fact is Rosholt looked very green in both of his submission losses, and the UFC's middleweight division is stacked enough that it's just a case of him needing more seasoning despite his impressive pedigree. The wrestling credentials he brings into the sport are some of the best in all of MMA, but the rest of his game hasn't quite caught up to that just yet. He'll likely find a home soon, as he would be a good addition to Strikeforce's middleweight division, and could also fight in Canada or even trek to Japan should he so choose. He's got a ways to go as a fighter, but he's got a good background and skill set to get him some wins outside of the organization to fight his way back in.
