By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief A much talked about "superfight" between UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre is no longer on the docket for the UFC.
According to UFC President Dana White in a story in the Canadian Press, Silva is simply too big for St. Pierre. "I think he's too big for Georges," White stated. "Forrest Griffin is huge and at the (UFC 101) weigh-ins, when we squared them off, he was as big as Forrest at 205 (pounds). The guy is unbelievable."
So while the middleweight picture will have a clearer view as far as it's top challenger after Saturday's UFC 102 event, St. Pierre will await the winner of Martin Kampmann vs. Mike Swick at UFC 103 to determine his next challenge.
With the injury St. Pierre suffered at UFC 100, he's not expected to return until February of 2010. To that situation, White said "That's a long layoff for him and he's a big star for us. So we want to get him back in as soon as possible."
Penick's Analysis: Before the fight with Griffin, many including myself believed St. Pierre would have a great shot at winning that fight. Seeing just how big Silva can be in comparison to a guy like Griffin along with his performance in that fight changed those thoughts. St. Pierre can dominate the welterweight division for a long time, but much like we saw when B.J. Penn moved up to face him, size plays a huge factor when that level of ability is involved. Even if they match up skill for skill, the extra size of Silva would work to his advantage the same way St. Pierre's did for him against Penn. It's unfortunate that we may never see that fight, but it's probably the correct call.
