By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief After MMAMadness.com and the U.K. based Fighter's Only reported that Shane Carwin's bout with Cain Velasquez had been scrapped to pit Carwin against UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, Ariel Helwani at MMA FanHouse is now reporting it as official.
Helwani reports that Velasquez will still fight on the October 24th UFC 104 card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, though no new opponent is known at this time.
Carwin has won three fights in the UFC, with only one coming on the main card, but at 11-0 only one of his fights has gone farther than two minutes into the first round. That fight happened to be his debut.
Lesnar will now defend his Undisputed Heavyweight Championship for the first time after unifying the title with Frank Mir's Interim belt at UFC 100 last month.
UFC 106 takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV, on November 21st, and is also likely to feature the return of Tito Ortiz against Mark Coleman in the night's co-main event.
Penick's Analysis: With it being Brock Lesnar's next fight and the return of Tito Ortiz, there's a large possibility UFC 106 will do comparable numbers to UFC 100. It likely won't reach the heights that the historical 100 event did, but it's got a good shot at a higher buyrate than any other show the UFC's ever done outside of UFC 100. This is a good fight for sure, and we'll definitely find out if Lesnar's got a chin, as well as if Carwin can not only fight past the two minute mark but whether he'll be able to survive a drawn out fight against the massive overpowering Lesnar. This should be another great heavyweight fight for the UFC in November.
