The UFC has released a promising update on Charles Oliveira after the scary scene at the end of UFC Fight Night 74 on Sunday night.
The featherweight headliner suffered what was described as a "micro-tear" of the esophagus, bringing an early end to his main event fight with Max Holloway. However, the UFC revealed in a statement on Tuesday night that nothing more serious was found in the initial tests done in Saskatoon.
"UFC featherweight Charles Oliveira has been released from medical care in Saskatoon today and will be traveling home tomorrow," The UFC's statement read. "Preliminary test results for major chest, neck or throat injuries were negative and Oliveira will have a follow up appointment with his local physician upon returning home. Oliveira is in good spirits and appreciates the support he's received from his fans during this time."
Penick's Analysis: The esophagus tear itself is scary enough, and hopefully it heals well for him in short order, but thankfully nothing worse resulted from that situation. His description of his body going numb was quite concerning, so obviously the worry was that something even worse could have popped up in this situation. Provided nothing more serious comes of this, it should be encouraging as far as getting him back into the cage to try rebuilding his momentum in the division again.
