Much as she's been for most of her reign as Women's Bantamweight Champion, Ronda Rousey enters Saturday's UFC 190 event a significant favorite over her challenger, Bethe Correia. However, the Champ has lofty goals for her career, and in the big picture she thinks she's an underdog to accomplish those.
"In these individual fights I might be a heavy favourite. In the end, I'm not a favourite at all. I'm a huge underdog," she said this week (via Sky Sports). "The end goal is I want to retire undefeated and be remembered as one of the most dominant athletes of all time.
"I want to be that one that retired on top, was always undefeated and walked out because I took the belt off and handed it back because I felt like it was time for someone else to carry it. Not because anyone took it from me. That's the way that I stay hungry. The goal is much bigger than than just one person. I'm just breaking it up into bite-sized pieces."
Rousey knows it's not a likely end for most in combat sports, but she hopes to be the exception that trend.
"Even my favourites - they were the best for a time and then it came to a close," she said. "I want to have the whole time be my time, and go out on my terms and not someone else's."
Penick's Analysis: Depending on how long she plans to fight and how many more times in that stretch, it's an attainable goal for Rousey. There's no one, outside of Cris Cyborg, who even seems like a challenge given what we've seen from her. There's not any major up and coming talents on the horizon who are likely to dethrone her before she decides to walk away. It would be fascinating if she wins another five or six fights - or more - and decides to walk away. You just don't see it happen in this sport, so for her to accomplish that would be incredible.
