While the drama surrounding the UFC 189 main event has dominated the news cycle, the UFC Welterweight Title fight between Robbie Lawler and Roy MacDonald has been largely an afterthought. It's unfortunate because the fight itself is a highly intriguing rematch in one of the UFC's marquee divisions, but both competitors are comfortable with their station into the July 11 event.
"It didn't bother me at all," Lawler said of the co-main event booking in an interview with FoxSports.com. "I'm a business as usual kind of guy and it's one of those things where I have been the first fight on the card and thought I was the main event.
"So it doesn't matter where I'm at on the card, I'm the main event. That's my mindset. That's been my mindset ever since I started fighting. I'm the guy everyone's going to want to watch and that's how I go out there and fight.
MacDonald echoed those sentiments, saying his paycheck will wind up being the same no matter where the fight happens.
"Not at all," MacDonald said when asked if he was bothered by their spot. "I don't mind at all being co-main event to that fight. It doesn't make me any more or any less money fighting for the title, co-main event, main event it doesn't make a difference. I get what I get no matter what with my current contract. It doesn't matter to me right now."
No matter the position of the fight, the bout will determine who will be the UFC Welterweight Champion on July 11.
Penick's Analysis: If Aldo remains on the card, it definitely is one of the rare times the lower weight class main event represents a more anticipated title fight. Now, Lawler-MacDonald may be fantastic, and indeed both are great fighters, but there are some occasions where the lower weight classes breed more intrigue, and this is absolutely one of them.
