UFC commentator Brian Stann thinks Jose Aldo's going to fight at UFC 189 for the money issue alone, but while he believes the Champion is going to defend his belt, he also thinks that the knowledge of Aldo's injury changes the dynamic of the fight.
In an interview with FoxSports.com, Stann said he believes it's a very real benefit to Conor McGregor to know what's going on with Aldo's injury, and thinks whomever let it leak out of Aldo's camp did their fighter a disservice.
"I think it's a big deal," Stann said. "When you're talking about a five round fight with a guy who strikes as well to the body, hits hard, a big 145'er, who's also a smart chess player inside the Octagon, I think it's a big deal.
"I think this is a lesson to all other camps and coaches out there that when things like this happen, you need to shut your mouth. I don't mean it in any way, shape, or form to say anything bad about Nova Uniao, I love those guys. They may be the best camp in Brazil if not one of the best in the world. They're phenomenal, but somebody there could have really hurt them. I've seen it happen before."
Penick's Analysis: These types of things do get kept under wraps more often than not, which is why there are so many fighters talking about their injuries after the fact. It would have been better for Aldo if he does indeed fight for the news of this not to come out, but it definitely changes the dynamic of the matchup now that it's public knowledge. McGregor says he won't be targeting it, but that doesn't mean it won't be something of which he can't take advantage. If the injury gives McGregor a significant edge just by knowing about it, then it leaking out will be highly unfortunate for Aldo's team.
