Donald Cerrone secured his eighth straight win on Saturday night, breaking John Makdessi's jaw with a head kick in the second round to score the stoppage victory at UFC 187.
Makdessi stepped up for the fight on short notice after the injury to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and he put forth an excellent effort as the underdog. While Cerrone got in a majority of the offense through the nearly ten minute bout, Makdessi did some significant damage of his own, and was having some success during the duration of the bout himself.
However, it was Cerrone picking Makdessi apart for most of the fight. He broke his lead leg down with kicks, landed some excellent head kicks, knees, elbows, and punches, and just never let up on offense.
The finish came in a bit of an awkward spot, as Cerrone landed a quick two kick combo, the second of which cracked Makdessi on the side of the jaw. Makdessi immediately backed up, put his hands in a "timeout" gesture, and the ref stopped the fight. He knew the jaw was broken, and didn't want to take any more damage beyond that. It was a smart move on his part given how much damage was done.
Cerrone now looks ahead to a likely title fight and a rematch with the last man to beat him, Rafael dos Anjos.
