Daniel Cormier tasted defeat in January for the first time in his mixed martial arts career, losing a decision to Jon Jones in a five round title fight.
It was a shared experience for Cormier with his friend and teammate Cain Velasquez, who suffered his first career defeat back in 2011, losing the UFC Heavyweight Title to Junior dos Santos. Velasquez eventually regained that title, and that ability to rebound from a crushing defeat meant he had some sage advice for Cormier following the January defeat.
"He said 'we all go through it.' He lost and went through it," Cormier said of Velasquez's advice in an interview with Fight Hub TV (transcribed by BloodyElbow.com). "'This isn't the last they're going to see of us. Eventually we will win that championship.'"
"Anytime you see your friend lose you want to fight the guy that beat him. He just doesn't want to see me sad. I wanted to fight Junior dos Santos when he knocked [Cain] out. Cain still has the confidence that I can get it done and he wants to see me get it done."
Penick's Analysis: A loss isn't the end of the world for any fighter in this sport. There is far too much competition, and even the elite of the elite in this sport have suffered defeat at some point in their career. There are a couple of exceptions, of course, but for the most part, fighters can bounce back from losses and still reach the top. Cormier may capture gold tonight, but it still won't quite be reaching that spot. He needs to beat Jon Jones, that just has to happen for him to hold that top spot. If he beats Anthony Johnson, he'll likely face Jones again, possibly even later this year, and he'll get his chance to prove his spot.
