Jon Jones turned himself into authorities in Albuquerque tonight after a warrant was officially issued for his arrest on a felony charge of fleeing the scene of an accident causing personal injury. His mugshot is below:
The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was booked and held on $2500 bond, though that's not going to keep him in the county jail for long. The next step will be him giving his side of the story to authorities on why he fled the scene of an accident in which he ran a red light and hit another vehicle, breaking the arm of a pregnant 25-year-old woman.
From there, Jones will have to face a court date, and possibly further charges given the marijuana in his rental vehicle. He's facing up to three years in prison for willfully fleeing the scene in an accident that caused a serious injury.
The UFC has yet to make any further statement, and as of now he has not been pulled from next month's UFC 187 event.
Penick's Analysis: I've said on a number of occasions that, when it comes to Jon Jones, his in-cage ability has trumped most of his out of the cage indiscretions. Whether he's likable or not is irrelevant to what he pulls off in that cage. However, that only goes so far, and though a hit and run isn't on the same level as some more heinous crimes that could have been committed, his actions are indefensible at best and reprehensible at worst. To leave a pregnant woman alone, injured, in an accident that you caused, is awful, and with how many chances Jones has already gotten makes it seem like he hasn't learned from anything that's happened in the past several years. It's a shame to see such reckless irresponsibility, and it's time for him to be held accountable for his actions. Will the UFC strip him of that title? I don't believe they will. I think they'll cancel his fight at UFC 187, but if he avoids jail time here I imagine we see him back in the cage in 2015.
