Phil "CM Punk" Brooks has gotten a wide variety of reactions from fans, fighters, and more for his decision to fight in the UFC. Some respect his desire to compete, others think he's a joke on the surface, and there are many more somewhere in the middle.
Count Michael Bisping in that camp. The UFC 186 competitor commented on Punk's impending entrance into the Octagon this week in an interview with TSN's Off The Record, and while he says he respects the fact that Punk will step in the cage, he thinks the former pro wrestling star will be in over his head.
"I respect anybody that has the cahonies to step inside an Octagon," Bisping said, "but if you're coming from a professional wrestling background like he is... this isn't 'story time' with mum and dad, this is the real thing. He's gonna learn pretty hard and pretty fast that this was a gigantic mistake on his behalf."
Penick's Analysis: The thing about Punk to the UFC is that Bisping might be entirely correct here. That doesn't mean Punk is necessarily wrong in going for it. If Punk finds himself overwhelmed by the reality of a fight, it could be a one and done situation. Then again, he's been training with a very good team, putting in legitimate time and effort into making a respectable showing whenever that eventually happens. I'm not so sure that it will turn out to be a mistake on his part, and though him winning a fight in the UFC might be a long shot, I doubt he winds up embarrassing himself the way some seem so certain he will.
