By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief A previously reported bout between Gabriel Gonzaga and UFC newcomer Chris Tuchscherer has officially been added to the UFC 102 fight card for Portland, OR, on August 29th.
With the main card already set, this bout will be contested on the un-aired preliminary card.
Gonzaga is coming off a tko loss to Shane Carwin at UFC 96 in March, a fight lasting just more than a minute. Despite landing a solid shot to Carwin early, Gonzaga was dropped to the canvas by a flat footed Carwin with a power shot and Carwin finished him off. It was only his third loss in nine UFC contests, the other two of which have come at the hands Fabricio Werdum and Randy Couture.
The highly touted Tuchscherer brings with him a 17-1 record into his Octagon debut. He was signed to a contract after trying out for this season's heavyweight edition of the Ultimate Fighter, but instead of having to fight his way through the TUF house he's getting his shot now. He's a training partner of UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and was a two time Division II All American wrestler in Minnesota.
UFC 102 airs live on pay-per-view from the Rose Garden in Portland, OR, on August 29th. The card is headlined by a heavyweight bout between Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and also features a middleweight contender bout between Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt.
Penick's Analysis: I said this when the bout was initially reported, I can't wait to see what Tuchscherer can do in the Octagon. He's lost once, by decision, in his five year career and has many notable victories under his belt, and he'll be a very game opponent for the vet Gonzaga. This should be a very good fight.
