"It's simple. We, as fighters, fight people for money. There's no real secret there, guys. We fight people for money... Sixty days from that fight [with Ryan Bader], I became an unrestricted free agent. Then any organization could make me an offer. Obviously I'm just sitting around training and staying in the office and staying busy, and the whole time, I'm like, 'Man, this could really go well.' ... I had to offer the chance to go back to the UFC and have them match the offer, and they declined. There was another offer on the table, and they declined to match."
-Phil Davis talks to MMAJunkie.com about signing with Bellator MMA.
Penick's Analysis: Davis got an offer he liked from Bellator, the UFC didn't want to match, and Davis is on to new endeavors. This entire process played out as expected once word came in that Davis and the UFC hadn't come to terms. Davis has the opportunity to now be the big fish in a smaller pond, and he's going to get paid significantly by virtue of the fact that he's unlikely to lose against the fighters he'll be facing in Bellator.
