Despite the preceding report that Brandon Thatch would take on Jordan Mein at UFC 189 in Las Vegas, Thatch has a different opponent for that card.
It was announced by Fox Sports 1's UFC Tonight that Thatch will be taking on John Howard, not Mein, on the UFC 189 card, making for a very different stylistic matchup.
It's official; Brandon Thatch vs. John Howard has been booked for UFC 189 in Las Vegas.
Thatch fights for the first time since his loss to Benson Henderson in February. That was the first loss of his career, and he'll try to get on track against the veteran competitor in Howard. The 32-year-old Howard is in desperate need of a win after dropping three straight fights, most recently getting stopped by Lorenz Larkin in January.
Penick's Analysis: This is a considerably less interesting fight. I'm not sure what happened to the Mein fight, but that would have been a much more entertaining fight than Thatch-Howard. I'm honestly surprised Howard's getting another UFC bout given his current run, and Thatch has a lot more promise overall, despite the loss to Henderson.
