Longtime UFC middleweight Michael Bisping has lost four of his last seven bouts over the last three years, but despite that latest loss to Luke Rockhold in November, Bisping believes he can still get to a title fight.
In an interview with MMAJunkie.com, Bisping said he truly feels he can work to a title fight, and he got in a shot at the current stream of fighters failing drug tests in the process.
"I'm still aspiring to be the world champion one day, and that will never stop," Bisping said. "And I know a lot of people are probably watching this and saying, 'Get a grip. Wake up and smell the coffee. It's never going to happen.'
"Listen, believe you me, I have the capabilities. I know that, and I will not stop. I will beat C.B. Dollaway. I will climb that mountain. I will get to the top – again. And hopefully one day I will get my shot. And I can guarantee one thing when I do get my shot: I won't fail my f***ing drug test for steroids. That's a fact."
Bisping returns to action next month at UFC 186 in Montreal, taking on C.B. Dollaway.
Penick's Analysis: Given Bisping's recent history, and the fact that he just turned 36, it's simply unlikely that we'll see him get a title fight in the UFC. It's just not likely to happen in a division as tough as middleweight has been. As for the other piece of his comments here, Bisping's among a short list of fighters who I wouldn't ever expect to see fail a drug test. It would be more of a shock than most others if Bisping got popped for something, and would make him look worse than others for how outspoken he's been against PED use.
