Phil Davis is without a UFC contract, and he's currently in an exclusive negotiating period with the organization, according to a report from Ariel Helwani on Wednesday's UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1.
Davis' loss to Ryan Bader last month came on the final fight of his contract, and he's now lost two of three fights. Though he's negotiating with the UFC, the two sides haven't come to an agreement on a deal, and he could have the opportunity to look elsewhere if the exclusive period expires with no deal in place.
The All-American wrestler out of Penn State has fought 13 times for the UFC over the last five years, compiling a 9-3 record with one no contest in that stretch. However, two of those losses have come in his last three fights.
Penick's Analysis: Given his losses to Rumble Johnson and Bader in his last three fights, it wouldn't surprise me if the UFC didn't wind up signing him to a new deal. It's a similar situation to fighters like Jon Fitch or Yushin Okami, who had fairly significant records in the Octagon, yet lost their spots anyway because of their style. Davis could wind up the latest.
