The Nevada Athletic Commission essentially rubber-stamped the temporary suspensions for Anderson Silva, Nick Diaz, and Hector Lombard on Tuesday at their monthly meeting, and all three fighters will appear at a future monthly meeting for a disciplinary hearing.
Silva and Diaz failed drug tests for their fight at UFC 183, Diaz for marijuana metabolites on fight night, and Silva for several substances on two separate drug tests both prior to and on the night of the fight.
Lombard, meanwhile, failed a drug test out of his win over Josh Burkman at UFC 182 for an anabolic steroid.
Silva tested positive for the anabolic steroid drostanolone both on a January 9 random out of competition drug test and on his January 31 drug test, passing a test in between on January 19. The commission also revealed that he tested positive for two Benzodiazepenes; however, neither of those substances is actually on the WADA banned list.
Further discipline will be meted out towards each fighter at a future meeting, with each getting a chance to plead their case and offer a defense to the commission.
Penick's Analysis: Given that the Benzodiazepenes aren't banned substances under the WADA rules that the commission supposedly goes off of, they shouldn't have been revealed, but the Quest Diagnostics lab has a different list of things they test for apparently. Still, that doesn't negate the multiple drostanolone failures, and it's even more disappointing than the initial test failure itself.
