Weigh-ins are just about to kick off for UFC 183, but there's drama before the fighters hit the scales. Tyron Woodley posted a video on YouTube, following up on several rumors and reports on Twitter, stating that Kelvin Gastelum is coming in nine pounds overweight for their co-main event fight.
Penick's Analysis: It's unclear why the UFC is allowing Gastelum to compete, as there were a couple of reports stating that Gastelum was actually hospitalized because of a disastrous weight cut. If that's the case, the fight should be called off, because simply for his health he shouldn't be fighting just over 24 hours after that bad a weight cut. Apparently he's being allowed to continue, though, as he's giving up 20% of his purse to Woodley. On his end, Woodley is agreeing to go ahead with the fight despite his anger at Gastelum's lack of professionalism, but this doesn't seem to be the right course as far as fighter safety is concerned.
UPDATE: Gastelum officially weighed in at 180 lbs., nine over the one pound allowance. Woodley initially was going to turn the fight down, as there was word it was going to be pulled from the card, but the UFC's Dave Sholler updated everyone on Twitter by saying the fight was a go, with Gastelum forfeiting 30% of his purse instead of the initially reported 20%.
